Peru Strengthens U.S. Air Connectivity After Retaining FAA Category 1 Certification

The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC), through the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGAC), reported that the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reaffirmed Peru in Category 1 for aviation safety, the highest classification awarded by this international body, after meeting operational safety standards.

In a statement, the MTC indicated that the Peruvian aeronautical system underwent the required audit to review compliance necessary to maintain Category 1. This was carried out by the International Aviation Safety Assessment (IASA) Program of the FAA, highlighting the arduous work undertaken by the country through its operational safety oversight systems, resulting in the positive outcomes now being celebrated.

This achievement also ensures that Peruvian airlines can operate and expand their services to their most important market.

The audit was conducted on the eve of the inauguration of the new terminal at Jorge Chávez International Airport, which has been postponed to January 31, 2025, at the request of the airlines. The Commission for the Promotion of Peru for Exports and Tourism (PROMPERÚ) has expressed on multiple occasions its intention to strengthen connectivity with the United States.

During the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum held in Lima, the United States acknowledged the indispensable collaborative ties it maintains with Peru. The North American country pledged to support Peru in improving its safety index after the U.S. Embassy in Peru issued a safety alert in October.

PROMPERÚ emphasized that half a million U.S. tourists visit Peru annually, primarily to destinations like Machu Picchu, Cusco, the Sacred Valley, Lima, and Lake Titicaca, making them one of the country’s five most significant visitor groups.
